  • 2/18/21: Grayscale’s crypto AUM (assets under management) surpasses $40B

Investor Target:

Tradable asset products for retail and institutional investors.

Company Overview:

Greyscale’s current initiatives center on establishing authenticity for its investment products and company, as well as crypto trading in general. The company headlines its robust storage security, service providers, and SEC-reporting status, and its products are publicly quoted on exchanges, including OTCQX, with regulated standards. Grayscale is portrayed as unambiguous and above board, with routine publishing of monthly investment reports and tax documents. Meanwhile, its product pitches all center on providing “exposure” to cryptocurrency trading through “traditional investment products,” and informational materials help to provide exposure and usher in new crypto traders.

On the investment side, Grayscale is focusing on bringing its products to public markets. On July 20th, it received FINRA authorization to publicly quote BCH and LTC on OTC Markets. Grayscale also recorded its largest quarterly inflows, $905.8 million in 2Q20, nearly double the previous quarterly high of $503.7 million in 1Q20. Inflows into Grayscale products over a 6-month period crossed the $1 billion threshold for the first time as well.

Overall, Grayscale seems to be cementing itself as the go-to provider for coin-trading via fractional shares, and with its slew of investors and strong performance seems to be aimed for success.

Investment Products Summary:

Grayscale products are divided into two primary categories: single-asset and diversified.

  1. A single-asset product is a tradable security tagged to a particular cryptocurrency. Its price is derived directly from the coin’s market price. The product enables investors to trade crypto via shares that are a fraction of the total coin price, with the benefit of trading cryptocurrencies “without the challenges of buying, storing, and safekeeping.” Grayscale has nine such products at the moment, including BTC and ETH.
  2. Grayscale’s only diversified product thus far, the Digital Large Cap Fund, is a fund with component parts of BTC, ETH, XRP, BCH, and LTC. Like its single-asset products, it serves to provide investors a means to trade a diversified mix of digital assets at a fraction of each coin’s value.

Investor Target:

Largely retail-oriented with IoT products, as well as higher level, professional-specific products for institutional investors

Company Overview:

Gemini’s most prominent service is its function as an exchange and custodian for individuals and institutions. Like Grayscale, Gemini prides itself on its digital asset security and customer support, positioning itself as the go-to exchange. Its banking services partnership with JP Morgan is a prime example of how to break into the traditional finance space from an obscure sector like crypto.

In terms of products, Gemini has been a leader in the crypto IoT surge, creating Gemini Wallets, mobile applications, and its own crypto version of Apple Pay. At the same time, Gemini also offers outlets for institutional investors with ActiveTrade, a paid service that provides advanced charting services and tools for the “more active” investor.

Gemini has been a key player in crypto innovation thus far, and it will be particularly interesting to observe how Gemini’s role as a bona fide custodian will change — in light of the recent U.S. policy enabling large banks to act as crypto custodians.

Investment Products Summary:

Gemini provides both IoT and consumer-oriented products in the crypto space:

They provide five products aimed at a consumer-grade market, one more professionally-oriented product, and three IoT solutions. Gemini also offers their own stablecoin, Gemini Dollar (GUSD). The consumer-oriented products offer a seamless, easy-to-use crypto experience for even those not too familiar with all the ins and outs of crypto; Gemini offers an exchange, secure wallets (Gemini Wallet), a crypto “savings” account offers up to 7.4% APY on users’ crypto assets (Gemini Earn), a secure custodian service (Gemini Custody), and finally a mobile app that combines several of these functions (Gemini Mobile). Gemini also caters to those more acquainted with cryptocurrencies through ActiveTrade, a “professional” trading platform with much more information and functionality. Gemini has also developed IoT and corporate products such as Gemini Pay (much like Apple Pay, but using cryptocurrencies), and a clearinghouse for crypto trades aptly named “Gemini Clearing.”

Vanguard logo
Vanguard: https://investor.vanguard.com/home

Vanguard — Quick Facts:

Founding Date: 1975

Number of Employees: 10001+

Rounds of VC Raised:

Funds Raised:

Founding location: Pennsylvania

Region/Geography:

Major Partnerships: Symbiont

Target Demographic/Tagline: retail economies of scale; focused on optimizing its current massive consumer base rather than product development

Digital Asset Initiatives:

  • Improve process of securitization with blockchain:
    - Vanguard Investment Management Fintech Strategies Head: “By digitizing and streamlining the ABS issuance process, we will be able to increase the speed and transparency of transactions while reducing costs and minimizing exposure to risk, which ultimately leads to a more efficient business model for future generations of capital market activity.”
  • Recent pilot with Symbiont, Citi, BNY Mellon, State Street: digital asset-backed security can be settled in 40 minutes via blockchain vs 10–14 days paper-based setting

  • 6/11/20 — Mutual Fund Giant Vanguard Wraps Phase 1 of Digital Asset-Backed Securities Pilot
  • 10/9/20 — Vanguard Developing Blockchain Platform for $6 Trillion Forex Market
  • 7/1/20 — Vanguard and State Street Are Resisting the Hot New ETF Craze

Investor Target:

Retail; focused on utilizing its enormous consumer base and economy of scale rather than making new innovations in crypto.

Company Overview:

Vanguard subscribes to a common theme among big banks and investment firms today: it leverages its assets towards its strengths — namely its massive consumer base being a mutual fund giant — and in turn, leans away from innovating in riskier markets like crypto.

In blockchain, however, Vanguard has been a forerunner: working to implement blockchain technology into the administrative tasks of traditional finance. It recently concluded a pilot alongside Symbiont, Citi, BNY Mellon, and State Street to digitize and streamline its decades-old Wall Street practice of repackaging loans into bonds for investors. Results were immensely successful, settling the entire process in 40-minutes as opposed to 14-days in a paper-based setting.

While Vanguard and other companies of its calibre may remain wary of the crypto market until a standardized market catches up, the utilization of blockchain technology may help to destigmatize cryptocurrency and new tech in traditional Wall Street.

Investment Products Summary:

Vanguard has products available in mutual funds, index funds, ETFs, and IRAs. Their mutual fund investing currently includes a large selection of both index funds and actively-managed funds. A Vanguard ETF allows for low minimums, diversification, and low costs. Vanguard Brokerage Services lets investors choose which stocks or bonds they would like to invest in. Fixed-income investments are available for investors who would like to preserve their capital and earn some income. The certificates of deposits (CDs) and bonds available can help lower the volatility of investors’ portfolios. Vanguard’s money market funds provide a lower-risk for investors.

  • 6/25/20 — Bitcoin Options Open Interest Hits Peak Hours Before Giant $1B Expiry
  • 6/5/20 — Bitcoin Options See ‘Fast’ Q2 Growth as CME Open Interest Tops $259M

Investor Target:

Retail and institutional investors within the CME Group ecosystem via cryptocurrency products.

Company Overview:

Like Vanguard, CME Group is not seeking to revolutionize original products in the space. However, unlike the mutual fund giant, CME Group has taken steps to meet the demands of its large investor base, having enabled cryptocurrency trading through its familiar platform.

— CME Group developed a Bitcoin and Ethereum “reference rate,” which is calculated by aggregating Bitcoin trading activity across major exchanges, and a real-time index to track it.

— In addition, the company implemented trading of BTC/ETH futures and options on futures.

While CME Group will likely continue to develop crypto products, its initiatives tend to be reactionary, catering to the interests of its consumer base, rather than as proactive innovators in the sector. It presents avenues for crypto trading on a reputable, established exchange with which consumers are familiar and can trust.

Investment Products Summary:

CME Group provides products in all major asset classes, which include futures and options that are based on interest rates, equity indexes, foreign exchange, energy, agricultural products, and metals. The interest rate futures and options let investors manage their exposure to government bonds and money market securities. Investors have access to a range of benchmark products including Eurodollars, Fed Funds, SOFR, and US Treasuries throughout the USD yield curve from one-week up to 30-years. The equity indexes allow investors to manage their equity exposure on benchmark indices such as S&P, Nasdaq, Russell, and Dow Jones with the ability to scale contract sizes from standard Equity Index contracts to Micro E-mini. FX Link and CME Group’s cleared and listed futures and options give investors the ability to manage their FX exposure through their very liquid marketplace. Investors have the ability to trade benchmark products in the energy markets such as WTI Crude, Henry Hub Natural Gas, Brent Crude, and RBOB Gasoline. The ability to hedge price risk in the global agriculture marketplace is available through benchmark products such as wheat, corn, and soybean futures and options. Investors can trade inter-market metals spreads and products from full-sized benchmark to smaller-sized contracts.

  • 7/14/20: CBOE Global to Launch Trading in Mini VIX Futures on CFE

Investor Target:

Retail and institutional trading through its exchange, with emphasis on developing advanced derivatives products.

Company Overview:

While CBOE announced it would make a comeback in crypto markets at the beginning of the year — having pulled Bitcoin futures and other listings the year before due to complications with SEC-approval among others — progress today seems to have stalled completely.

Nevertheless, while concrete CBOE developments in crypto have yet to be released, its current product development line, particularly its VIX and VIX futures volatility indices, are closely related and applicable to the market movements of Bitcoin. We can expect CBOE to remain interested in crypto; for now, however, CBOE is not a relevant player in the crypto space.

Investment Products Summary:

Cboe provides equity index options as well as proprietary products such as VIX derivatives and credit futures. They currently have U.S. equity index options, international equity index options, corporate credit and interest rate futures, FLEX options, LEAPS options, weekly options, and volatility derivatives. FLEX options are customized tools for portfolio management that allows investors to specify key contract terms on major stock indexes and individual equities.
